The UNIX/PC/MacOS ArcView software can use vector data in one of three formats:-
ArcView Shape files (suffix .SHP). This is a file format unique to ArcView, but the specification of the format has been published and translation modules to other GIS systems are becoming available. ArcInfo coverages can be converted to Shape files by using the appropriate ArcView commands. |
Workstation ArcInfo layers, called coverages, accessed via a network connection from the PC or Mac. This can also include ArcInfo Map Librarian layers from a UNIX or NT ArcInfo library. |
PC ArcInfo or ArcView layers in the coverage format. ArcInfo export files can be turned into coverages by using the ArcView Import command at either the DOS prompt or within Windows. The usage is typically IMPORT <export file> <coverage name>. It is quite acceptable to make a local copy of ArcInfo coverages, for example on a CD from a UNIX source, and to then use these on a PC or Mac version of ArcView. |
