Course Duration : 1 or preferably 2 days.
Hands on sessions are interspersed with the topics below, but the opportunity for including this component and the tutorial exercises is severely limited if it is desired to restrict the course to one day.
1/ ArcView Structure and Concepts
· Application window

- In this section the basic structure of ArcView is explained.
- The menus and button-pads of the application window are shown to the user.
- A new map project is created and data themes/tables are added to a view and shown in a layout window.
- The chart wizard is explained.
2/ Spatial Data
· ArcView data structures - shape files and themes
· Input data sources/formats
· Exporting themes
· Creating themes
· Manipulating data layers using the view window
· Attribute data
· Theme properties
- Section 2 shows what file types can be imported into ArcView, and how ArcView stores the data.
- New ArcView themes are created, and data layers are added and manipulated using the view window.
- Data themes are symbolised using attribute information.
3/ Using and Manipulating Spatial and Attribute Data
· Identifying and selecting features
· Altering theme structure
· Updating attribute information
· Labelling features
· Overlaying data themes - geoprocessing
- Section 3 shows how to query themes and select features using SQL functions.
- Attribute information of selected features are updated.
- Items of themes are added, deleted and altered.
- Features are labelled using attribute information.
- Themes are intersected, joined, dissolved, clipped and unioned.
4/ Editing Objects
· Adding, deleting and altering lines, points and polygons.
· Combining, splitting and deleting objects
· Snapping objects
- Section 4 explains how to add and edit spatial objects in ArcView, and how to add or update the attribute data related to the physical objects.
5/ Creating Layouts and Charts
· Creating frames in a layout
· Adding map windows and tables to a layout
· Adding graphical elements to a layout
· Creating layout templates
· Creating charts
- Section 5 shows how to create a map using a layout window. The user is shown how to add frames to a layout, and add other graphical objects such as a legend, borders, text, a scale bar and a north arrow.
- Templates are created to automate map production.
- Charts are created to display attribute information of the data themes.
6/ ArcView Scripts
- Section 6 explains how to use some useful scripts which are included with ArcView.
